Exposing EPI
What is EPI?
Don't be shy about talking to your provider.
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition that can cause complications, including malnourishment. Yet, it can go undiagnosed if you don’t raise concerns with your health care provider.
EPI symptoms can mirror those of other, troubling, gastrointestinal (GI) issues from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to celiac disease, such as:
- Losing weight without trying.
- Stomach cramps.
- Gas and bloating.
- Diarrhea.
Survey shows
New research from AGA shows many Americans aren’t aware of EPI and rarely seek treatment.
-
Just over 1 in 5 say (22%) say they sought medical advice in the first few weeks of experiencing GI symptoms.
-
More than a quarter (28%) have never sought care for their symptoms.
-
20 percent thought their GI symptoms were just something to tolerate.
-
Nearly 80 percent (79%) have never heard of EPI.
-
Nearly three-quarters (72%) are unfamiliar with the differences between EPI and other common GI disorders.
Remember, EPI is treatable
Don't suffer in silence. EPI is treatable and there is relief for uncomfortable symptoms. Only a health care provider can diagnose EPI, so ask your provider for more information.
